Norbert Grixti
Norbert joined the Grand Hotel Excelsior in January 2007 in the position of Director of Human Resources. He was then promoted to General Manager, and was instrumental to the successful opening of the hotel. With a career spanning over 30 years, Norbert is a veteran in the Hospitality Industry, and hails from a solid Human Resources background. He considers Human Resources development and training as a fundamental aspect of the success of the Grand Hotel Excelsior.
He holds qualifications in Hotel, Catering and Tourism Management from University of Malta and in HRM from University of Leicester. He has extensive lecturing experience and had formed part of the MTA Choice Programme, promoting careers in the industry to young people.
Michela Grixti
Michela joined the company in 2008, and has formed part of the HR Department since 2010. In July 2015, she was promoted to Training Manager and is consequently in charge of the overall training and development function at the Grand Hotel Excelsior. She is involved in the planning and implementation of all Training and Development initiatives within the company. She believes that training for hospitality team members should be a fun and interactive experience, and enjoys using alternative approaches towards traditional classroom training, such as group challenges, practical exercises, cross-training etc.
Michela holds a B.A (Hons) in English from the University of Malta and an MSc in Human Resource Management and Training from the University of Leicester. In addition, she has been asked to lecture in People Management at external educational institutions at Diploma Level (Level 5). Her main areas of interest are Leadership, Managing Teams, People Development and Service Excellence within the Hospitality Industry.
Brian Bartolo
As Director of Sales & Marketing, Brian leads the Sales team and its core segments. He is also fundamental in forecasting, budgeting, and measuring guest service and satisfaction. Brian is highly experienced within the local Tourism Industry, having worked at the national airline for over 15 years.
Brian holds a B.A (Hons) in Banking and Finance from University of Malta. In 2004 he was awarded a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the prestigious Henley Management College. He also holds a Masters in Business Ethics. Due to his vast experience and notable academic background, Brian is highly forward-thinking, and consistently works to develop strategies to improve the hotel product and service whilst generating maximum revenue. Brian is an accomplished lecturer, having delivered training with at various prestigious educational and business enterprises.
Samuel Attard
Samuel is the Security and H&S Manager, and has been employed at the company since its inception. Prior to this, he had extensive experience within the Malta Police Force. He is actively involved in the Induction of new team members, providing basic health & safety and emergency evacuation training. He also performs occupational health & safety training, risk assessments, and conducts regular fire drill evacuations. He has also trained Duty Managers on emergency procedures. In addition, he analyses safety needs and organises regular training accordingly, e.g. First Aid, Fire Fighting, Life-Saving etc. Samuel holds certification in Occupational Health & Safety.
Justine Borg
Justine holds a B.Ed (Hons) degree in Science, and extensive experience in the Hospitality Industry. She is very knowledgeable about food microbiology, and has a key role in ensuring HACCP compliance by the organisation and team members. Furthermore, she works to ensure that cleaning chemicals are used safely and in compliance to health and safety regulations.
Justine provides training on safe use of cleaning chemicals, HACCP, food allergies and dietary requirements, and is licensed by the Food Safety Commission as a Food Handlers course tutor.
Fabian Fenech
Fabian has been employed at the Grand Hotel Excelsior since the pre-opening period, and is passionate about using innovative techniques to enhance training and staff motivation. He was instrumental in the design, production and editing of various training materials and videos used by the company. These include videos on Customer Excellence, Hotel Standards and Cyber Security. Fabian holds a BSc (Hons) in IT.
Melissa Sambugaro
Melissa is an enthusiastic hospitality professional with a flair for guest service. She joined the team at the Grand Hotel Excelsior as a part-time Concierge, while she was completing her B.A in Theatre Studies at the University of Malta. After her graduation, she was promoted to Guest Relations Manager, where she is responsible for creating guest experiences, and assisting guests with queries and complaints. Melissa is currently reading for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Her areas of expertise include Guest Service Excellence and Managing Difficult Customers.
Andrew Tabone
Andrew has extensive experience in the luxury hospitality industry, having worked at several local properties. He currently occupies the role of International Sales Manager, and is responsible for MICE business. He also has a Higher Diploma in Hospitality Management from ITS.
Andrew is very passionate about staff training and development, and deems it to be highly motivating. To date, he has supported several internal initiatives, including training on upselling and guest service to achieve an edge over competitors.
